Ericsson had decided to move out of their current “Studio” (Customer Experience Centre) in Stockholm and build a completely new one. The centre is designed to show what 5G will enable in real-world applications, from remote monitoring of ambulance to hospital, autonomous vehicles, and Smart Cities, and many others besides.
The move is taking place in two stages – first, the centre is moving to a temporary space, which has also been purpose built. And then they will move into their new permanent home, later in 2020.
Our task is to make a video of each stage, so that customers, from literally around the world, are enticed to visit it.
Our first step therefore was to design a storyboard that flicked from the demo to the application, and which would use a mixture of film and CGI.

The next stage was actually to get some idea of the spaces – despite the fact that one has not been built yet.
On the first trip to Stockholm we managed to take some panoramic HDRs.
The next stage was to re-visit Stockholm, when the first of the two spaces was actually operational, and capture footage both indoors, as well as a few outside shots that matched the storyboard as originally devised.
The final shots were done in Berlin, as neither the Ericsson facilities or the Stockholm background were actually required.
The next task was to take our selected edits, out of hours of footage, and comp elements together.
The screenshots below are almost a blow by blow account of how we are able to change the environment of a character in a video.
This scene was cut from a corporate film before we could add CGI magic to it, as the client didn’t want the woman to act “in distress”. Which is kind of odd as we have never heard of somebody saying that being in labour was a fun state to be in!
